Football offseason recap

first_imgKatie Chin | Daily TrojanThe USC football team has very high expectations for the upcoming season, as evidenced by its No. 4 ranking in the coaches poll. Everyone knows the program is one of the best in the country, but here’s what you might have missed over summer break:RecruitingThe Trojans’ 2018 recruiting class is currently ranked 18th by 247sports.com. It’s headlined by linebacker Palaie Gaoteote, the lone five-star commit USC currently has in its 2018 class. The Trojans were stung by the loss of prospect Matt Corral, a five-star quarterback in the class of 2018. Corral decommitted from USC in late June and is currently committed to the University of Florida. The pain of losing Corral was replaced with joy when the University landed J.T. Daniels — 247Sports’ top-ranked quarterback in the class of 2019 — in July. The junior quarterback from Mater Dei High School chose the Trojans over other top-flight programs Alabama and Michigan, as well as rival Stanford.Head coach Clay Helton also secured a commitment from 247Sports’ top-ranked 2018 center, four-star recruit Justin Dedich, in June.Key LossesThe Trojans will have to replace 11 starters from last year’s squad, including five players taken in the NFL Draft. The most significant loss is that of cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, who, in addition to setting a school record for career kick return touchdowns with eight, won the 2016 Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back and was a productive receiver in his time on campus. Jackson was drafted 18th overall by the Tennessee Titans and has already flashed his incredible athletic ability as a returner. He is working to make his way into the starting lineup at cornerback.Quarterback Sam Darnold loses top wide receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Darreus Rogers, who were reliable targets last season. Smith-Schuster was drafted 62nd overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who add to their abundance of talented receivers. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the rookie has sustained a number of injuries at camp, the most recent being an apparent knee injury earlier this week. Rogers signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent. In addition, USC will have to replace three starters on the offensive line, including right tackle Zach Banner. Banner was drafted in the fourth round by the Indianapolis Colts, and is currently a back-up on their line.Kicker Matt Boermeester, who kicked the game-winning field goal in the Rose Bowl, was dismissed from the University in July for a student code of conduct violation. Michael Brown and walk-on Chase McGrath are in a fierce battle for the starting spot. The position has been a cause for concern as fall camp has progressed, and Helton has said that the competition could continue into the regular season.Watch ListsUSC has players on just about every pre-season award watch list. Darnold is being tracked as a Maxwell and O’Brien award candidate, which are awarded to the best player and best quarterback, respectively. Darnold is also a preseason pick for the Heisman Award.Defensive back Iman Marshall will try to follow in Jackson’s footsteps as a Thorpe Award winner. He will also be a contender for the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards for best defender.Porter Gustin is on the watch lists for the Bednarik Award, as well as the Butkus Award for best linebacker. Ronald Jones is a possible recipient of the Doak Walker Award for best running back, while Helton is a preseason contender for the Dodd Trophy for best coach.Other NotesFreshman linebacker Tayler Katoa will miss the season after tearing a knee ligament during spring practices. According to ESPN, Katoa’s injury required surgery and will keep him sidelined for a total of nine months.Over the offseason, offensive coordinator Tee Martin designed an app that quizzes players on team concepts such as formations and receiving routes. A Los Angeles Times article detailed how coaches can check how long players are on the app, as well as their results. The app was created as part of a program-wide effort to reduce mental mistakes. If the system is successful, the Trojans should improve on a season in which they ranked 113th in the nation in penalties per game and 114th in penalty yardage.last_img read more

Rhodes holds on in overtime for first Trucks win since 2018

first_imgLast Updated: 7th September, 2020 11:04 IST Rhodes Holds On In Overtime For First Trucks Win Since 2018 Ben Rhodes moved to the front when he stayed out instead of pitting during overtime and held on for his first Truck Series win in two years on Sunday. First Published: 7th September, 2020 11:04 IST Associated Press Television News Written By WATCH US LIVE Ben Rhodes moved to the front when he stayed out instead of pitting during overtime and held on for his first Truck Series win in two years on Sunday.Sheldon Creed, who came in after winning two of the past three races, was cruising in front with three laps left. But a wreck involving Matt Crafton, David Ragan and Josh Reaume brought out a caution and OT.Creed, a Darlington first-timer, went in for tires while Rhodes remained on the track. And then Creed was called for speeding on pit road, ending any chance he might’ve had to regain the lead.Derek Kraus briefly surpassed Rhodes on the restart. But Rhodes rebounded for his first victory since 2018 at Kentucky.“That was a lot of fun,” Rhodes said.Kraus finished second and Austin Hill was third, followed by Grant Enfinger and Christian Eckes.Creed came out of the pits in 20th and wound up 18th.He and GMS Racing teammate Brett Moffitt dominated most of the race. The pair combined to win the first two stages and led 146 of 152 laps.Moffitt ended up 10th, his second time out of the top six in the past eight races.“That one hurts,” said Creed, adding that he remains confident in his team heading into the Truck Series playoffs, which start in two weeks. The regular season finishes at Richmond next weekend. The 23-year-old Rhodes was giddy over his third career win.“I’m not letting this checkered flag go,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming.”Rhodes wasn’t sure what to expect in Darlington’s first truck race since 2011. The track picked up the event originally set for Canada that was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Rhodes, like many in the field, hadn’t raced over Darlington’s tricky, egg-shaped layout before.“We come here with no practice and never being here before and we were able to get the win,” he said.center_img SUBSCRIBE TO US COMMENT LIVE TV FOLLOW USlast_img read more

Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask makes head save against Lightning

first_imgBruins goaltender Tuukka Rask made a beautiful save with his head on Wednesday in a round-robin NHL postseason game against the Lightning. With a shot from near the blue line speeding toward him, he intentionally deflected the puck away with his head like a soccer player. I still can’t believe this head save by Rask. The puck gets on him pretty quickly, and not only does he see it and position his head to block it, but he then nods it into the corner. Doherty calls for task force to save creches from threat of closure

first_imgDonegal Deputy Pearse Doherty is calling on the Taoiseach to set up and lead a Ministerial Task Force to address the insurance crisis after Ireland’s creches were dealt with a blow this week.Ironshore Europe, one of Ireland’s biggest insurers for childcare, is reportedly set to withdraw from the Irish market, leaving just one main company operating from January 2020.Deputy Doherty said that childcare providers who were insured with Ironshore Europe could face closure if they cannot get alternative cover or their premiums rise with the switchover and a lack of competition. He called on the Taoiseach to immediately set up and lead a task force with key Ministers to deal with the impending crisis.Speaking today, Deputy Doherty said: “Without exaggerating, this has become a full-blown crisis across several sectors. Not just childcare, but community and voluntary groups, the leisure sector and small businesses.“The Government have failed to take the failure of the insurance market, and its impact on businesses, seriously. The Minister responsible for the insurance sector doesn’t even sit at the Cabinet table.“From the opposition benches Sinn Féin have called for immediate reforms in the insurance sector; from the set up of a dedicated Garda Insurance Fraud Unit to the banning of dual pricing by insurance companies. My Consumer Insurance Contracts Bill, which would strengthen the position of consumers in their contracts, is due to pass all stages in the Seanad this week.” Deputy Doherty said the issue cannot be ignored any longer: “I am calling on the Taoiseach to set up and lead a Ministerial Task Force to address the insurance crisis; not as just another talking shop but to take immediate action. This Task Force should include the Minister for Finance, Minister for Business, Enterprise & Innovation and Ministers representing the most affected sectors, including the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs.“This Task Force should meet with the industry and affected sectors, find solutions and deal with this crisis before it ends with the mass closure of businesses and childcare providers across the State”. Doherty calls for task force to save creches from threat of closure was last modified: December 9th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

‘Address skills, labour reform, corruption’

first_img15 February 2012Opposition MPs, in a National Assembly debate on President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation address on Tuesday, welcomed the focus on infrastructure development while urging Zuma to focus more on developing skills, implementing labour reforms and tackling corruption in the country.Debating the address delivered by Zuma in Parliament last Thursday, Congress of the People (Cope) leader Mosiuoa Lekota said South Africa needed to focus more on developing and training its people if it wanted to do away with unemployment and poverty.“Unless we address it, we won’t be able to address the economy and help our people find their way out of the backwardness and squalor that face them,” Lekota said.Infrastructure development would only be effective as a short-stop solution, but would not address the unemployablity of South Africans, he said.Lekota also wanted to know what had happened to the R5-billion youth-wage subsidy that the Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan had mooted in last year’s Budget Speech.Earlier, African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Mathole Motshekga said the development and refurbishment of cultural icons and heritage sites such as memorial sites could help support small businesses, create jobs and back an African cultural renaissance.Lekota agreed that something needed to be done about setting up cultural heritage sites, but questioned the timing of these developments, particularly in a time when South Africa had a large budget deficit.Corruption ‘leading to a dysfunctional state’Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosutho Buthelezi welcomed the creation of a Durban-Johannesburg trade corridor outlined as one of five regions by Zuma in his State of the Nation Address. But, he said, KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Transport had ceased all road projects, while the City of eThekweni (Durban) had run up R1.2-billion through bad spending.Buthelezi said Eskom’s build programme should not have been funded by tariff increases, but rather through foreign direct investment, and added that Zuma also made no mention of how to assist small businesses and the declining mining and agricultural sector.Buthelezi said increasing levels of corruption in South Africa meant the country was on the verge of joining the world’s dysfunctional states. He singled out Transparency International’s 2011 report, which revealed that South Africa was becoming more corrupt, and a briefing last year to the justice portfolio committee by former head of the Special Investigating Unit Willie Hofmeyer, who revealed that R25-billion to R30-billion or 20% of all state procurement is lost to corruption every year.South Africa’s economy ‘remains uncompetitive’Leader of the opposition Lindiwe Mazibuko detailed several initiatives to tackle education and the economy that her party would implement if it were in government. She said South Africa’s economy remained uncompetitive, particularly in key sectors such as mining, manufacturing and farming through labour regulation. To boost the economy, the Democratic Alliance (DA) would introduce voluntary exemptions on labour regulations for certain sectors, a youth-wage subsidy and a one-stop business registration office for those looking to set up businesses.Mazibuko said the current black economic empowerment (BEE) model had only succeeded in creating a small elite who had access to finance over and over. Her party wanted to incentivise share ownership across the economy to allow workers to partake more in BEE initiatives, she said. The DA would not choose to focus on particular sectors, as the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) does, but rather help new businesses to start up by creating targeted incentives and venture capital funds. In education, the party would give schools the “maximum resources” for the first three grade years in schools and carry out assessments on pupils in grades 3, 6 and 9.It was also necessary to limit the ability of teachers to strike and only allow them to go on strike after consulting with the government, Mazibuko said.Minister on Planning in the Presidency Trevor Manuel said it was clear that there was little disagreement on the content of President Jacob Zuma’s speech, but urged the President, who was in attendance, to heed remarks made by opposition members.Manuel said the National Planning Commission was currently getting comments from South Africans on the National Development Plan, which was released in November last year, and added that a final version is expected to come before the President in June or July.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Facebook Suing Power.com for Auto-Logging

first_imgFacebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Facebook is suing Power Ventures in Northern California District Court for its social network aggregator, Power.com. Power.com is used to pull together information from a variety of social network sources. Facebook maintains that PV is violating a number of its terms of service, including one that insists you cannot “collect users’ content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without our permission.”All Facebook said that in itself is not illegal, but by utilizing a proprietary site’s information without its permission makes it “a criminal violation under the California Penal Code Section 502(c) and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).”The Electronic Frontier Foundation filed an amicus brief in support of Power Ventures. Facebook argues that by offering these enhanced services to users, Power violated California’s computer crime law. It grounds its claim in the fact that Facebook’s terms of service prohibit a user from having automated access to a user’s own information and that Power continued to offer the service to Facebook users even after Facebook sent Power a cease and desist letter demanding that it stop. Yet merely providing a technology to assist a user in accessing his or her own data in a novel manner cannot and should not form the basis for criminal liability. It’s hard not to buy the logic of EFF’s argument. It’s equally difficult not to see the possibility that this suit is an attempt to discourage any actions on the part of users to master Facebook information. That interpretation is certainly in keeping with Facebook’s recent activities, in terms of its providing user information to developers and forcing users’ hands when it comes to their own information. Facebook, it might be argued, wants to be the only arbiter of its information. And by its information, of course, they mean yours.
